INDIANAPOLIS CYCLING EVENT WINS "BEST CITY TOUR"
IN 2001 NATIONAL COMPETITION

INDIANAPOLIS, IN [20 MARCH 2002] -- The eighth annual "N.I.T.E. Ride", a 20-mile night-time bicycling tour of Indianapolis, was named "Best City Tour" in the 2001 national competition of cycling events "BEST BIKING IN AMERICA!" conducted by the League of American Bicyclists and Bicycling Magazine. The event was held July 28, 2001.

Nearly 100 cycling events from across the United States were included in the competition. The "N.I.T.E. (Navigate Indy This Evening) Ride" also won the category "Best Entertainment".

The N.I.T.E. Ride, hosted by Central Indiana Bicycling Association, Inc. (CIBA), started at 11 PM at the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis and followed a 20-mile scenic loop on well-lit roads through downtown Indianapolis. The route crossed the White River, passed by Victory Field, the Indianapolis Zoo, and the Indiana Government Center, and looped around Monument Circle and through the near-North side before returning to the Velodrome. The post-ride party at the Velodrome included a spaghetti dinner provided by Fazoli's Italian Restaurants and live entertainment with blues band Craig Brenner and the Crawdads.

BICYCLING EVENT WINNER

"Over 120 CIBA volunteers worked together with our event sponsors and the City Of Indianapolis to host the N.I.T.E. Ride," said Event Director Dan Shields. We're very proud of how this event continues to promote bicycling for exercise, touring and recreation, and how beautiful downtown Indianapolis looks at night as viewed from a bicycle."

Shields noted that about half of the 2,200 participants were from outside the Indianapolis area, with 10% coming from other states.

The "N.I.T.E. Ride" was actually the last event in a day full of cycling activities. A regular CIBA club ride, free of charge and open to the public, opened the day at 8 AM. Registered participants got the chance to take a spin on the Major Taylor Velodrome racetrack in the afternoon, and a 16mile "Dinner Ride" began at 5 PM. United States Cycling Federation (UCSF) sanctioned amateur bicycle racing began at 6:30 PM and provided evening entertainment before the ride.
